On April 8, New Yorkers will wear their funky special glasses, and maybe get some popcorn as they prepare to look skyward as the moon swallows the sun in a total solar eclipse. But these are markers of modern life. And eclipses come with centuries-old traditions.
In conversation with educator Perry Ground, Giulia Leo brings us an ancient eclipse story from the Haudenosaunee people, a Native American Confederacy that Ground is part of and whose traditional lands span over what some of us now call New York State.

Elizabeth Roldan’s alarm goes off at 7:45 every morning in her studio apartment in Harlem. By 8, she has swallowed 500 milligrams of Lamictal and another 300 of Keppra.
Roldan has been on these anticonvulsants since Christmas day, 2003, when she had her first tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure at age 21. One moment she was sitting at the dining table celebrating with her family in New Jersey, the next she was in the hospital, receiving a diagnosis of epilepsy.

In art, women often fall victim to a binary representation that sees them as either angels or monsters. In Ana Lily Amirpour’s film masterpiece, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014), the main character (played by a wonderful Sheila Vand) is a girl with no name who might just as well be both.

She is actively involved with the Black Lives Matter and Feminist movements and works with Black Lives Matter Rome, Neri Italiani-Black Italians (NIBI), and Women’s March Rome (WMR). A few days ago, Carolina and I grabbed a virtual coffee from the comfort of our respective houses. As we sipped on our hot drinks, we talked activism, social media, modeling, and fashion.
